"Grass Routes" & “Common Grounds”

From Richard's blog pitchmarks came in 2023 Grass Routes, a collection of essays about courses from The Berkshire to Borth & Ynyslas, and Ashridge to Aberdovey. It includes several new chapters and some glorious photography - mostly not the author's!

And now, in 2025, a companion volume that builds on the momentum of Grass Routes, with a particular focus on the unsung marvels of the golfing world. Common Grounds features 27 courses across Great Britain & Ireland, with a pit-stop in the heathlands above Paris and a snowball-chucking contest in the Swiss Alps for good measure. It is a celebration of the rustic roots of the game, delivered in short chapters and interspersed with gorgeous, monochrome photography.

A debt of gratitude to Grant Books Ltd for their generosity and patience in bringing a lifelong dream - to publish a book; now two books - into reality. Since 1971 they have been publishing the best in golf writing; it is humbling to appear among such gorgeous company.

This site gives you the opportunity to help Richard clear a large pile of boxes from his hallway and maybe fund one or two future golfing adventures and a few more golf balls, for which many thanks in advance.
